5 Signs You May Have a Nursing Home Neglect Case
Placing a loved one in a nursing home is one of the most difficult decisions a family can make — and one that comes with the expectation that they will be treated with dignity, respect, and proper medical care. Unfortunately, nursing home neglect is far more common than most people realize.
1. Unexplained Injuries or Bruising
Frequent falls, bruises, cuts, or fractures that staff cannot explain may indicate neglect or even physical abuse. Residents who are improperly transferred, left unattended, or restrained inappropriately are at high risk of preventable injuries.
2. Pressure Sores (Bedsores)
Bedsores are one of the most tell-tale signs of nursing home neglect. They develop when immobile residents are not turned regularly. Severe, Stage 3 or 4 bedsores are almost always preventable with proper care.
3. Sudden Weight Loss or Dehydration
Malnutrition and dehydration can indicate that a resident is not being properly fed or assisted with meals. If your loved one has lost significant weight or appears dehydrated, take it seriously.
4. Emotional or Behavioral Changes
Watch for sudden withdrawal, depression, anxiety, or fear when staff members are present. These changes may indicate emotional abuse or intimidation.
5. Poor Hygiene or Unsanitary Living Conditions
If your loved one is regularly found unwashed, in soiled clothing, or in an unsanitary room, that facility may be understaffed or poorly managed.
